This book hits you right between the eyes, where you need it! June 12, 2010 Lynne (Denver, CO, USA) I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents, and anyone else involved with teens and pre-teens. It contains hard-hitting examples and advice for dealing with "teen-age thinking" in such a way as to encourage teens' development of responsibility for their own actions and making plans for the consequences of their choices. I bought it on the recommendation of a psychologist as a gift for a struggling single parent of a 14-year old who is living "on the wild side."
A must read for parents of pre-teens & teens! April 11, 2010 Renee (Las Vegas, NV) This book so helpful & useful. I've used a couple of the techniques on my 11 yr old son and they work great.
This is a must read for parents!
I've been recommending it to everyone I know.
A strongly conservative-Christian bias April 1, 2010 SophieG (New England) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is a refreshing because it points out the devastation caused by the "helicopter" parenting style that is so common today, and I feel that some of the parenting techniques presented are sensible and valuable. However, as several other reviewers point out, the book is so laced with the author's conservative Christian religious and political biases that it was impossible for me to finish it. References to God, Christ, and the Bible are made frequently, and completely dominate the chapter on sexuality. (For specific examples, see the 1-star review by Alison Wtight.) In the earlier Love and Logic books, one of the chapters was devoted to what to do if you child won't go to church. In this book, the chapter is entitled "Church and SYNAGOGUE," in half-hearted attempt to encompass religions other than Christianity, however the text gives no consideration to families with other values. The conservative viewpoint extends to politics as well. In discussing what to do if a teen says something a parent doesn't agree with, the example used was a teen saying "Socialism is a really great way to distribute wealth and create just societies." Gasp! How shocking! The suggested response by the parent makes it very clear that a teen saying something like this constitutes a family crisis, instead of an interesting opportunity to discuss political traditions in countries other than the US.
People's political and religious views are their own personal business and should be respected, but they should never be the basis for a book aimed at the general population, particularly a population as diverse as we are in the US. If you have conservative Christian values, this book might be very helpful for your family. If you don't, I would suggest looking elsewhere for parenting techniques. Cline and Fay are obviously incapable of keeping their own belief system out of their "therapeutic" techniques.
I now have a new perspective on parenting teens February 17, 2010 MJB (Pittsburgh PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love and Logic made a dramatic difference in our family relationships. Parenting a difficult 13 year old was creating stress and strife in our family. The principles of Love and Logic (and especially applied to teen situations in this book) were completely up to date, relevant and more importantly worked! As a result, we as parents feel better about parenting our teens with this strategy and our daughter has learned to make her own decisions (right or wrong). That's what we really want for our daughter - to be able to learn how to make decisions and live with them. Would highly recommend this book.
If you have teenagers......... Get This Book! February 3, 2010 C. Clementi 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Was turned onto this book over 9 years ago and have purchased many copies for friends that are having difficult times with their own teenagers. Friends call after reading it and tell me how much it has helped.
This book really makes you think about your actions before you react. It is a MUST read!!!
Also, can help in your day to day life.
